ASSET MANAGEMENT TRAINING
WHAT IS ASSET MANAGEMENT?
Asset Management is a core function of a financial institution and usually refers to an investment firm which manages the investments of their clients. These firms manage many different types of investments from tangible (real estate, farms, cash, etc.) to intangible (patents, intellectual property, goodwill, etc.). Asset Management firms are primarily responsible for operating, maintaining, upgrading, and disposing of assets cost-effectively. Additionally, companies can offer an expanded range of traditional and alternative investment products to their clients that would not be available to the average investor.
Asset management services are generally offered to high net-worth individuals (known as private wealth management), corporations, sovereign wealth funds and pensions. The firm will typically charge a fixed percentage of total funds managed as a management fee. However, this is up for negotiation between the firm and the client.
SKILLS ARE REQUIRED TO WORK IN ASSET MANAGEMENT
Careers in Asset Management require a deep understanding of financial modeling, balance sheet analysis, and corporate valuation techniques. They will also need to possess the ability to read, interpret, analyze and create financial spreadsheets and earnings reports. Asset managers then need to take this information and make recommendations based on their findings.
Quantitative and analytical skills are imperative for careers in asset management. Classes in accounting, statistics or the investment banking training course offered by the International Finance Institute can be a big help in obtaining these needed skills.
